DOMINICA THE HEALING ISLAND
written by Terri Henry Onelove Livity
Dominica has a strong reputation as the island of rugged natural adventure. Yet in recent years it has also emerged as a place for therapeutic and relaxing healing. For those seeking something more exotic than an indoor therapy centre, Dominica provides a natural spa experience and is the ultimate health retreat for mental and physical wellbeing.
Contact with nature is an essential part of a healthy human psyche. In May 2007 the UK based, mental health organization ‘MIND’ released research to show how clearly our connection with the natural world contributes to our mental health. The report concluded with the recommendation that doctors refer patients for ‘Ecotherapy’ to combat stress and depression instead of prescription drugs. Dominica with its richness of lush mountain forests and pristine rivers could soon be a part of a medical prescription for healing!
The mountains of Dominica are filled with hiking adventures and any visitor will automatically tone and strengthen their muscles with walking expeditions. Breathing in the fresh air from the island, which has 65% forest and natural vegetation cover, is a boost to the entire body system. After the exertion there are plenty of natural options for deep relaxation to soothe aching muscles and tired minds. A trip to one of Dominica’s 365 rivers provides cleansing and serenity, whilst a visit to the beach to soak in seawater is a great detoxification treatment. Seawater healing, known in the spa industry as thalassotherapy, can be especially useful for those suffering with arthritis or inflammation and is a free treatment available to all.
Another natural spa experience in Dominica comes with the abundance of hot water sulphur springs. The small village of Wotten Waven is becoming known as the spa village of the island with a variety of options for soaking in natural outdoor hot water tubs. Other hot water pools exist throughout the island, including Portsmouth and the southern village of Soufriere. The delightful treat of a sulphur bath embedded within natural surroundings eases away tension and the water has also been shown to relieve symptoms of rheumatism, arthritis, gout and skin complaints such as eczema and sunburn.
The law of attraction states that ‘like attracts like’ so it is no wonder that the natural healing vibration of Dominica has attracted many holistic therapists who have made the island their home. A selection of highly trained massage therapists, offer the healing power of touch. Many combine their skills with a number of other healing arts such as Reiki, Reflexology and Aromatherapy to ensure clients get a well rounded treatment specific to their needs. Other therapists on island are available for Osteopathy, Chiropractic, New Decision Therapy and Ecotherapy – quite a selection for a small island with a population of just 70,000 people!
To further unify mind, body and spirit, yoga classes are available on an almost daily basis. ‘Yoga in Nature’ tours are also offered, which combine the inner rejuvenation of yoga with the natural serene ambiance of the rainforest. Included in the tours are healthy vegetarian lunches or brunches so that participants are immersed into the full experience of a healthy natural lifestyle.
The availability of fresh and natural foods is integral to Dominica’s healing power. Driving through the narrow and winding roads on the island, edible delicacies greet your every turn. The local markets are filled with fresh, locally grown produce that contain a high density of nutrients. The Dominica Organic Agriculture Movement (DOAM) is currently working towards a national certification program and there are plans to expand organic production on the island to ensure greater health to both producers and consumers.
With the wealth of natural plant resources, there are a number of herbalists on the island who use nature as a medicine cabinet. Gathering herbs from the wild mountainside forests or from carefully cultivated garden plots, many of these herbal healers combine wisdom passed down from generations, with studies of the latest in scientific research. A wide range of dried herbs, tonics and oils are available as natural remedies for preventative and curative effects. Natural soaps and cosmetics are also made on the island with at least three companies making botanical based soaps and creams.
The holistic healing thrust would not be complete without healing for the environment. This comes in the form of initiatives to promote renewable energy such as solar, hydro, wind, geothermal and biodiesel as fuel. Short courses are available to learn more about making and installing these technologies to ensure a sustainable and clean environment for future generations.
It would seem that the healing power of Dominica is indeed paying dividends in longevity with a high percentage of centenarians on the island. So for a journey into full wellness it would seem fit to get a prescription to visit Dominica!
