WHY SHOULD I HAVE A GENERATOR?
You’re lying in bed one night feeling very comfortable as the A/C in your newly built house is keeping you and your family at just the right temperature. Just as you are about to close your eyes everything goes dark and silent. The lights, the A/C, your fridge and even your alarm clock have stopped working. What happens now? One of two things; either you and the rest of your family wake up from the heat and start moaning about the power cut OR you stay in bed and count to 10 while your new FG Wilson generator automatically starts up and takes over. The A/C is back on, the fridge is working to keep all that nice food you just bought cold and the alarm clock is ticking away as it normally does. You’re comfortable again, and you haven’t even lifted a finger. We rarely think about electricity until it’s not there.
What can we do without it? Not much.
WHAT TYPE OF GENERATOR SHOULD I GET AND WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
There are many different types of generator out there. The most important things to consider when choosing one are; What size do you need? Automatic or manual starting? Diesel or gasoline? Reliability? Spare parts availability and technical support? Warranty? Cost of ownership? Service intervals? Life expectancy? Resale value? The difference can mean investing your money wisely or making an expensive and regretful mistake.Generally speaking, diesel engines are more fuel efficient, built stronger and last longer, although they cost a little more to buy. Reliability is critical (of course), as are spare parts and technical support. A longer warranty period is usually a sign of a good quality design & manufacturing. Service intervals can range from 50 to 400 hrs of use and regular, quality servicing is, without a doubt, the key to longevity.
The right generator that is installed and looked after properly should last you and your family many, many years.
WHERE CAN I GET THE RIGHT GENERATOR, WHO DO I ASK?
When looking for a generator, consider the reputation of the manufacturer and the reputation of the supplier. Anyone can sell you a generator, but can they install it properly? Will they honor the warranty in writing? Do they have spare parts in stock and technicians on call? Ask them for referrals from other customers and make sure everything is in writing to avoid problems later on. Ask them how often it needs to be serviced and how much a service costs.
Remember, you only ever get what you pay for!
